Arrival & Stay

Where is Hotel Sonnenburg located?

Hotel Sonnenburg is located in Oberlech am Arlberg in Vorarlberg, Austria, at an altitude of approximately 1,650 metres above sea level and right above the village of Lech. The area is part of the Arlberg ski resort and is particularly peaceful and scenic.

Is Hotel Sonnenburg open all year round?

Sonnenburg is open almost all year round and welcomes guests in both summer and winter.

Here are the current opening times for each season:

Is there parking at the Hotel Sonnenburg and is it included in the price?

In summer, parking is available directly at Hotel Sonnenburg, free of charge. In winter, Oberlech is car-free. Park your car in the underground car park Anger in Lech, where your vehicle will be registered, allowing you to enter and exit without a ticket. From there, you can travel comfortably to Oberlech and Sonnenburg by gondola. Tickets for your arrival and departure are included in your stay. Your luggage will be transported for you.

How does the arrival in Oberlech work – especially with luggage?

In winter, you drive to Lech and park your vehicle in the underground car park Anger. As Oberlech is car-free during this time, you then travel up to Oberlech by gondola. Your luggage is collected at the arrival point and brought directly to Sonnenburg, where it will already be waiting in your room – for a relaxed arrival and a comfortable start to your holiday. In summer, you can drive directly to Hotel Sonnenburg with parking available on site.

Until what time can I stay in my room on departure day?

On your departure day, your room is available until 11:00 am. A later check-out is possible on request, subject to availability.

    What is the difference between the main house Sonnenburg Stammhaus and the Sonnenburg Landhaus?

    The Stammhaus is Sonnenburg’s 5-star hotel, offering modern comfort at the highest level. The Landhaus is an alpine 4-star Superior property, situated in a slightly quieter location. Both buildings are connected by an underground tunnel, giving you access to the full range of Sonnenburg’s facilities, no matter where you stay.

    Which rooms and suites are best suited for families?

    For families with children, Hotel Sonnenburg’s most suitable options are the spacious rooms and suites with multiple sleeping areas:

    • Junior Suites and Gold Junior Suites offer plenty of space and are ideal for families with one or two children.
    • Platinum Suites and Platinum Plus Suites have separate living and sleeping areas, perfect for larger families.
    • Rooms with connecting doors allow flexible combinations for families with multiple children or for multigenerational groups.

    Different sizes and layouts are available depending on your needs. We are happy to help you choose the room that fits your family’s needs best.

    Which rooms are suitable for larger families or groups?

    For larger families or guests travelling together, Hotel Sonnenburg offers particularly spacious suites with multiple sleeping areas. These include, for example, Platinum Suites and Platinum Plus Suites, which offer ample space and privacy through separate living and sleeping areas. In addition, rooms with connecting doors allow flexible combinations for stays involving multiple groups or generations.

    Does Hotel Sonnenburg have special rooms for people with allergies?

    Yes, the Stammhaus, the five-star main house at Hotel Sonnenburg, has specially equipped rooms for people with allergies. They feature selected materials and special flooring solutions that bind dust and thereby support an atmosphere that is as low in allergens as possible. Cleaning regimes are also tailored to reduce allergen exposure.

    If you have specific requirements, please let us know in advance so that the appropriate room can be prepared for you.

    Are the rooms suitable for holidays with babies or toddlers?

    Yes, the rooms at Hotel Sonnenburg are very well suited to holidays with babies or toddlers. Upon request, a baby package can be provided directly in the room, including a cot, changing mat, bottle warmer, and baby monitor. This ensures that all important needs are taken care of stress-free from the moment of arrival. Many rooms and suites also offer sufficient space or separate sleeping areas, so that both parents and children have their own retreat.

    Do the rooms have wooden or carpeted floors?

    The choice of flooring depends on the building. In the Stammhaus, the five-star main house of Hotel Sonnenburg, you will find specially selected carpeting in most rooms, which binds dust and supports a pleasant room atmosphere also suitable for people with allergies. In the Landhaus, the 4-star Superior house, wooden flooring is also used in some rooms, keeping with the alpine style of the property.

      Wellness

      When is the spa area open?

      The pool area is open daily from 7 am to 7 pm. The Sonnenburg wellness area is open daily from 2 pm to 7 pm and is available to guests aged 14 and over. The sauna in the pool area is reserved for families only from 2 pm to 5 pm, after which the same area is used as a ladies’ sauna from 5 pm to 7 pm.

      What saunas and steam rooms are available?

      Sonnenburg’s wellness area offers a variety of saunas and steam rooms:

      In the wellness area:

      • Finnish sauna (approx. 80–100 °C)
      • SANARIUM® (approx. 40–60 °C)
      • Steam room (approx. 42–45 °C)

      In the pool area:

      • family sauna, which is also used as a ladies’ sauna from 5 pm to 7 pm

      The wellness and spa area is completed by a Kneipp pool, heated loungers, a tea bar, and quiet areas with cosy reading nooks.

      Are children welcome in the wellness area?

      Yes, children are warmly welcome in the wellness area at Hotel Sonnenburg. The facilities are arranged so that different areas can be used according to age.

      Children of all ages may swim, bathe, and relax in the panoramic pool together with their parents. The family sauna is open to families daily from 2 pm to 5 pm. The remaining sauna landscape, comprising the Finnish sauna, SANARIUM®, and steam room, is reserved for guests aged 14 and over.

      Is the spa area included in the price?

      Yes, the panoramic pool and the full sauna and wellness landscape are included in your stay and free of charge for all hotel guests. No need to think of additional fees, simply step in and wind down.

      Individual massages and spa treatments are available to book separately. Our concierge team will be happy to advise you and arrange your preferred appointments – on request, even before your arrival.

      What massage and beauty treatments are offered at Hotel Sonnenburg?

      Hotel Sonnenburg offers a diverse range of massages focused on relaxation, recovery, and wellbeing. The selection may vary depending on the season. The Sonnenburg team will be happy to inform you of the treatments currently available by telephone or email.

      How do I book spa treatments?

      Our concierge team is happy to assist you in selecting and booking your preferred spa treatments – both before your arrival and during your stay. Your personal spa programme can therefore be arranged in advance. You can reach us at the reception, by telephone, or email. We recommend booking early.

        What makes Sonnenburg a literary hotel?

        Sonnenburg incorporates literature visibly and experientially throughout your entire stay. Books are available in the rooms, and a library, a dedicated poolside library, and quiet reading nooks around the hotel invite guests to browse and read. The offering is complemented by regular readings and literary events, which both hotel guests and outside visitors are welcome to attend.

        How many books are there in the Sonnenburg library?

        You can find more than 2,000 books in German and English in the Sonnenburg library – and the collection is constantly growing. Discover an additional 50 titles in the poolside library, as well as a curated book box with around ten selected titles in your room.

        Can I borrow books at Hotel Sonnenburg?

        Yes, you can borrow books from the Sonnenburg library without registration or prior request.

        Are there literary events at Hotel Sonnenburg?

        Yes, as a literary hotel, the Sonnenburg hosts varied events with different formats and guests depending on the season. At its core are regular author readings with well-known writers, as well as family readings for guests of all ages.

        Special event series complement the programme: with “A Hotel Reads a Book”, all guests immerse themselves in a selected work together with the author. The Oberlech Picture Book Days are a multi-day festival centred around picture books – especially for families with children. The annual event “Fantastic Worlds in Oberlech” transports guests into the world of fantasy literature and other fascinating topics for a weekend – with readings, talks, and interactive activities on the programme.

        Can I attend events even if I am not staying at Hotel Sonnenburg?

        Yes, outside guests are also warmly welcome at literary events at the Hotel Sonnenburg. The admission fee of € 5 per person can be paid directly at the reception before the start of the event.

        Are there events for children around books and reading?

        Yes, Hotel Sonnenburg also hosts literary events for our young guests with different formats and themes depending on the season.

        These include, for example, creative literary workshops where children write, create and solve puzzles, as well as the Oberlech Picture Book Days, during which children aged 6 and over develop their own picture book together with a children’s book author. Which events take place during your stay will depend on the current programme – so it is well worth checking our events calendar.

        Regardless of the programme, a dedicated book trolley with over 60 titles for children is always available in the Kinderwelt kid’s club – from picture books and non-fiction to fairy tales. All children up to the age of 12 attend readings and events free of charge.

          Which restaurants are part of Sonnenburg?

          Sonnenburg has four restaurants in total:

          • Hotel restaurant Sonnenburg: breakfast from 7:30 am with a varied buffet featuring over 200 products, dinner from 7 pm with a multi-course dinner menu and the flavours of Austrian cuisine
          • Sun terrace: the sunny lunchtime spot with alpine specialities, pastries, and sharing dishes
          • Schüna: the rustic à la carte restaurant in an elegant atmosphere, with cheese specialities and fondue
          • Textur: the award-winning gourmet restaurant with literarily inspired menus.

          When are the restaurants of the Sonnenburg open?

          Opening times vary by restaurant:

          • The hotel restaurant is open daily for breakfast from 7:30 am and for dinner from 7 pm.
          • The sun terrace opens daily from 11:30 am. In winter, it serves lunch until 4 pm before continuing seamlessly as a bar and restaurant until 9:30 pm. In summer, lunch service is extended until 5 pm before evening service begins.
          • The gourmet restaurant Textur opens in winter from Tuesday to Thursday, and in summer from Thursday to Saturday – by reservation only.
          • The Schüna is open to our guests after reservation. Whenever you would like to plan a fondue or raclette evening, our team looks forward to hearing from you on +43 5583 2147 or welcome@sonnenburg.at.

          Are restaurant reservations required and if so, how far in advance?

          This depends on the restaurant:

          • At the hotel restaurant, no reservation is required for hotel guests – simply take a seat. If you are not staying at Hotel Sonnenburg and wish to join the breakfast buffet, please make a reservation by telephone or email in advance.
          • For the sun terrace and the Schüna, we recommend making a reservation, as seats are limited – especially during peak season.
          • For the gourmet restaurant Textur, a reservation is essential. We recommend booking as early as possible.

          Are there vegetarian or vegan dishes?

          Yes, we ensure that all dietary requirements are catered for. The breakfast buffet features a wide range of vegetarian and vegan delicacies. At dinner, you can choose between meat, fish, or a vegetarian option for each course – vegan guests can receive the entire menu in a fully vegan version, if they give us short notice prior to their stay.

          At the Schüna and on the sun terrace, all vegetarian and vegan dishes are clearly marked on the menu. For individual dietary requirements such as gluten-free, lactose-free, or wholefood options, please inform us at the time of booking.

          We are also happy to accommodate your wishes at the gourmet restaurant Textur – simply let us know at the time of reservation.

          Are individual dietary requirements or intolerances catered for?

          Yes, in all our restaurants we are happy to accommodate individual dietary requirements – whether vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, lactose-free, or other intolerances. We simply ask for a brief note at the time of booking so that we can prepare your stay in the best possible way.

          Can you eat at the Sonnenburg restaurants if you are not staying at the hotel?

          Yes, outside guests are warmly welcome. The generous breakfast buffet is also open to non-hotel guests upon prior reservation. The sun terrace is accessible daily to all food lovers – whether you are staying with us or passing through as a hiker or skier.             Family Holiday

            Which age groups is Hotel Sonnenburg suitable for?

            Hotel Sonnenburg is a family hotel for all generations – from the very youngest to grandparents. The Kinderwelt kid’s club, open 24 hours a day, is available to babies and toddlers at any age together with their parents. From the age of 3, experienced childcare staff take care of our young guests. Teenagers have their own space in the youth room “Freiraum” and are invited to join supervised activities such as climbing, canyoning, and snowboard lessons. For adults and couples, the hotel offers a first-class experience with a spa area, a gourmet restaurant, and literary events.

            Does Hotel Sonnenburg offer childcare?

            Yes, Hotel Sonnenburg offers professional childcare for children from the age of 3. The service is included for hotel guests. Experienced childcare staff take care of your youngest in the Kinderwelt kid’s club at the hotel. Depending on the season, childcare is offered 5 to 6 days per week, for 5 to 6 hours per day. For children under 3 years of age, we are happy to arrange a babysitting service through our partner agency.

            At what times is childcare available at the Hotel Sonnenburg and how is it organized?

            Childcare takes place in the Kinderwelt kid’s club at the hotel, where your children are supervised by experienced childcare staff. It is intended for children from the age of 3 and is included in your stay.

            Our childcare team organizes a varied daily programme and activities and supervises free play. In winter, it takes place on at least 6 days per week for a minimum of 6 hours per day; in summer, on at least 5 days per week for a minimum of 5 hours per day.

            In addition, we invite our young guests to join our supervised outdoor programme in summer with fixed hours from 9:30 am to 3 pm, organised by an external partner.

            Are there offers for babies and toddlers?

            Yes, Hotel Sonnenburg also has suitable amenities and offers for babies and toddlers.

            Upon request, a baby package is available in the room, including a cot, baby monitor, bottle warmer, kettle, changing mat, and nappy bin. The Kinderwelt kid’s club is open to children of any age. Babies and toddlers from 0 to 3 have to be accompanied by their parents.

            For times when parents want to enjoy some time by themselves, Hotel Sonnenburg will gladly arrange a babysitter through an external partner agency upon request. This service is not included and should be organised well in advance.

            Are there indoor play areas for children and young people at Sonnenburg?

            Yes, there are several indoor play areas for children and teens at the Hotel Sonnenburg. The 24-hour children’s playroom is open at all times and features, amongst other things, a climbing wall, a slide, and plenty more fun things to discover and do. Older children and teenagers have access to the youth room “Freiraum”, which is equipped with billiards, table tennis, table football, and air hockey. The ideal place to hang out and have fun.

            Are there leisure activities and outdoor programmes for children and teens?

            Yes, Hotel Sonnenburg organises a varied leisure and outdoor programme for children and teenagers – in both summer and winter.

            In summer, guided activities such as climbing, canyoning, hiking, and archery are available. In winter, ski and snowboard lessons provide variety on the slopes. Additionally, play and relaxation areas are available all year round indoors.

              Winter Holiday

              What does ski-in/ski-out mean at Hotel Sonnenburg specifically?

              Ski-in/ski-out at Sonnenburg means stepping out of the ski room and directly onto the slopes. And it also means skiing back right to the doorstep of the hotel.

              As the hotel is situated in the car-free Oberlech at an altitude of approximately 1,650 metres, there is no need to walk or take a ski bus at all. At the end of the ski day, or for a short break, you can return to the hotel in the most straightforward way possible.

              Which cable cars and lifts are nearby?

              In the immediate vicinity of Sonnenburg are the Petersbodenbahn and the Bergbahn Lech–Oberlech.

              The Petersbodenbahn can be reached in a matter of seconds on skis and provides direct access to the Ski Arlberg ski resort. The Bergbahn Lech–Oberlech is also situated right next to the hotel, connecting Oberlech with the valley town of Lech in approximately three minutes.

              Are ski passes available directly at the hotel?

              Yes, ski passes for the Ski Arlberg ski resort are available directly at the reception of Hotel Sonnenburg. The ski pass is not included in the room price and is charged separately. However, you can purchase it conveniently at the hotel and head straight out for your ski day without any detours.

              Is there a ski rental directly in the hotel or nearby?

              Yes, you can find a ski hire shop at Hotel Sonnenburg. The sports shop Sport Huber is situated in the basement next to the ski room with direct access to the slopes. It offers a large selection of skis, snowboards, and accessories, as well as ski servicing. Advance reservation of equipment is possible.

              Are there ski schools nearby and how does booking classes work?

              Yes, Skischule Oberlech is located directly opposite Sonnenburg just a few steps away. It offers lessons for children, teenagers, and adults, as well as group and private instruction. You can either register directly at the ski school or conveniently by contacting the Sonnenburg concierge team, who will be happy to assist with the organisation.

              What else can you do around Hotel Sonnenburg in winter besides skiing?

              There are numerous winter activities to discover around Sonnenburg beyond the slopes. These include sledging, winter and snowshoe hiking, cross-country skiing, and horse-drawn carriage rides. In the valley town of Lech, you can also go ice skating or give various indoor activities a try. At Hotel Sonnenburg itself, the wellness area, playroom, and literary events offer ideal alternatives for relaxed hours.
